One Weird Direction

Not sure if you can tell what that photo is, but it is an ad in Seventeen Magazine for a "One Direction" perfume.

I'm tutoring a lovely woman who is taking English 101.  She has to write an essay discussing the ideas from one of three writers about gender roles in contemporary society and how they are supported or contradicted by the images in print ads.  She brought a Seventeen magazine, and as we were flipping through the magazine, I spotted that ad for the One Direction perfume and just about died laughing.  I know about this "music" group because my daughter, Moogie, who is 22 years old by the way, is crazy about them.  Honestly, over Christmas break, she made me watch the One Direction Movie with her, and the entire movie, kept stopping it and then saying, "isn't he cute?" or "don't you just love him?"  ha ha ha and that isn't the only super funny thing in the magazine, there was an article on how to carve pumpkins that look like the guys from One Direction:

In the photo, there was a girl kissing the pumpkin that had been carved to look like one of the One Direction guys.  Don't ask me which one because it was absolutely hideous.

I had to take photos with my horrible little phone and send them to Moogie in NYC.  My poor student didn't understand what I was doing.  The evening was weird anyway, because I had to explain a Katy Perry Perfume ad to the student, too.  I can't remember the name of her perfume, but because of the way she was dressed in the ad, I had to explain to this middle aged woman from Sudan with limited English what a Dominatrix is.  And what S and M means.  College tutor...that's my job.

My phone was the topic of conversation earlier today, too.  I was using the phone to time one of my middle school age students, when he said, "No offense, but your phone is really old.  Why don't you get a new one?"

I said, "I make phone calls and text.  Why would I need a new phone?"

He was so confused at this response.  "Your phone is old. You could have a touch screen. It would be faster."

"I don't need those things."

Finally, he gave up.  "I guess it's pretty cool to have a retro phone."

Ha ha ha ha ha!

Tomorrow, I'm going to Fiber Friday at Crossroads, then tutoring from noon - 2 THEN, I am heading to the Meydenbauer Center to help set up the Eastside Knitters Guild booth for Vogue Knitting Live: Seattle/Bellevue.  I need to make some links to my posts from last year because those have suggested places to eat and park.  I've been so busy this month, I haven't been able to get out and about at all.  I am excited for the event, and while I'm still coughing, I am feeling much better than I did last weekend, and I know we will have a great time.

Peace,
