I really loved the Day 18 pattern for the 2014 Advent Calendar Scarf by Kristin Benecken. It looks like cables, but there are none.The effect is just series of knits and purls between k2tog and lots and lots of YO'd. I think the pattern looks a bit like bamboo. Because the YO's and K are stacked directly on top of each other, you get those cool straight lines. I have no idea where I would use this pattern again, but I am thinking about it.
