Love & Honor 6" Square Tutorial, Multi-Color Hearts Version

Love & Honor 6" Square - (multi-color hearts version)

Hi there!  I thought I would write up a quick tutorial on how I made this wonderful square with alternating color hearts.  First I would like to, again, thank Aurora Suimonen, who is Dragonflymomof2 on Ravelry, for designing and sharing this beautiful square.

The directions in blue and red are from Aurora Suimomen, the ones in black are broken down by me.
Round 1:  Ch4 and work 11DC in 4th ch from hook. Join in 3rd ch of beg ch4.   (12dc)
Fasten off, and cut yarn leaving tail to be woven in.

Make the hearts:
* Round 2:
Change color and attach in the top of any of the above DC.

Ch3, 2DC in same dc.
ch 3 (this counts as your first DC

2DC in the same stitch (this forms a 3 DC cluster)

Round 3:  Ch3, 2dc in same dc.  1DC in next dc, 3DC in next dc.

TURN WORK,Ch3

2DC in same DC (the ch 3 is from this DC, this gives you 3 DC)

 1DC in next dc

3DC in next dc (This DC is actually the ch3 you made last round; this forms a set of 7 DC

Round 4
Skip 1dc, 5DC in next DC, Slst in next dc, 5DC in next dc. Skip a dc, slst in next dc

TURN WORK, skip 2 dc, 5DC in next DC  (Make sure you are in the 3rd dc)

Slip Stitch in next (middle) dc

5 DC in the next dc (this is in the 5th of 7 DC set)

slip stitch in the top of your ch3

You have finished 1 heart.
The first time you make a heart, you finish off the thread here VERY LOOSELY leaving a fairly long (@10" tail).

Make 5 more hearts

Moving to the RIGHT or CLOCKWISE from your first heart,
skip 1 stitch in the original 12dc ring, and attach your new color

Repeat from * to

CH2, slip stitch in side of last heart

TURN WORK sc in ch2 space

slip stitch back in same color heart and finish off. (this tail can be shorter than the first heart, just leave it long enough to weave in comfortably)

Turn work back to the front, and make 4 more hearts, always moving to the right or clockwise, attaching them together.
When you get this far you will have 6 hearts all connected EXCEPT the first heart.  This is why you left that long tail loosely bound off!

Undo your bind off and pick up the stitch

Using the tail, Ch 2

Attach to the Last Heart made with a slip stitch

Turn and sc in 2ch space
attach with slip stitch back in original Heart and finish off again

You can see in my example that I barely had enough tail, so be generous when you first finish off that heart.

Making the Border
Round 5: Ch1, SC in same st. [Ch4, SC in slst between heart humps, Ch4, SC in sc between next 2 hearts] 5 times.  Ch4, SC in slst between heart humps, Ch4 and join in 1st sc. (12ch4, 12sc)

Join border color in the slip stitch between any of the heart bumps.
Ch1, sc in same stitch

[Ch4, SC in sc between  2 hearts, Ch 4, SC in slip stitch between heart bumps] 5 times.
The final time, Ch 4, SC in sc between 2 hearts, Ch 4, join with slip stitch in first sc.

Round 6: Ch1, 3SC in same st. [ (+3SC in ch4 sp, SC in next sc+) 2 times. 3SC in ch4, 3SC in next sc.] 2 times.  Repeat between +to+ 2 more times. 3SC in last ch4 sp, join to first sc. (56sc)

Ch1, 3SC in same st (first corner made)

*[3SC in ch 4 sp, SC in next sc]2 times

3SC in ch 4 sp, 3SC in next SC (corner made)* 3 times.

[3SC in ch 4 sp, SC in next sc]2 times, 3 SC in ch 4 sp, join in first sc.

Round 7: Ch3, in next st work 2DC, Ch2, 2DC (corner made)  [DC in next 13sc, Work Corner in next sc.] 2 times.  DC in last 12sc, join. (68dc). Fasten off.

Ch3
in next st work 2DC, Ch 2, 2 DC (corner made)

[DC in next 13sc, Work Corner in next sc.] 2 times.

DC in next 13sc, join. Fasten off.

Now comes the hardest part:  WEAVE IN ALL THE ENDS!

Again, thanks to Aurora Suimonen, who is Dragonflymomof2 in Ravelry.  Can you tell I was a bit obsessed with this fun square?  Super enjoyed crocheting it.

Have fun hooking!
