Stitch Tutorials for Advent Calendar Scarf 2011 Days 13 - 18 Monday, January 2, 2011

Happy New Year!

This is a continuation of  my "out-take" blogs of the stitch patterns for the  Advent Calendar Scarf 2011 designed by Kristin Benecken.  Again, I want to thank Kristin for her wonderful designs, and for guiding all the 2000+ knitters around the world in making our beautiful scarves.

Pattern Day 13
The only different stitch is a cable.

Pattern Day 14
 I0I  slip 1 over 3 (see Pattern Day 6)
 R = k1thbl  (see Pattern Day 7)

Pattern Day 15
No new stitches

Pattern Day 16
≥ = k3tog

1. Insert the right needle knitwise into 3 stitches at the same time:

2. wrap the yarn around the needle and pull through as if you were knitting 1 stitch (this can be a bit hard especially if you are a tight knitter):

3. This is what it looks like:

≤ = k3tog tbl

1. This is a twisted version of k3tog.  Insert your right needle straight through 3 stitches as if to purl, but ending with the right needle in back:

2. yarn over and pull through all 3 stitches like a normal knit:

3. This is what it looks like:

Pattern Day 17

IO  (or OI) = yo p1
These are done on the Wrong Side and are simply Yarn Overs alternating with Purl Stitches.  These stitches will be used in the next Right Side row with the  [5] stitch.

[5] 5 from 5

This stitch uses the 5 IO (yo p) you made in the last wrong side row.

1. Slip 5 stitches as if to purl dropping the YO's (yarn overs)  in between those stitches:

You will have 5 super loose stitches on the right needle:

2. Slip those 5 super loose stitches back onto the left needle and knit them together but don't finish the stitch, leave them on the needle:

You now have 1 stitch on the right needle:

3. Yarn over.  You now have 2 stitches on the right needle:

4. Knit the 5 stitches together again, keeping them on the left needle:

You have 3 stitches on the right needle:

5. Yarn Over again. This makes 4 stitches on the right needle:

6. Knit through all 5 stitches AGAIN (this is getting a bit tough, but because you made those super loose stitches, it is doable):

You have 5 stitches on the right needle, so you are finished, and you can slip the stitches off the left needle:

This is what the finished stitch looks like:

Pattern Day 18

nothing weird, just a cable =)

That's all for these days.  I'll finish up the tutorials tomorrow.

Hope these are helpful.  If you have comments, suggestions or especially corrections, please leave a comment on the blog and I will fix it as soon as I can.
